Families in Hawaii County's Puna and South Kona districts manage properties adjacent to remaining native ecosystems, where ungulate damage and rapid ohia dieback reduce canopy cover at rates documented by state forestry surveys at 15 percent per decade. On Oahu, urban residents in the Ewa and Central districts live farther from intact habitat but influence watershed health through coastal runoff that reaches rural restoration sites via the same aquifer systems.
The grant program requires applicants to demonstrate site access on specific islands and to track species return at fixed monitoring plots.
